WILD BIRD

Birds represent freedom – particularly if they are of the wild variety – and the birds in this book represent freedom in all its forms. At its most beautiful, we have the freedom we find in travelling, where we find ourselves and lose ourselves in the now, with its fresh experiences and welcoming terrain. Then, there are the bright echoes of history, which sound in our ear, and which tell us that others have trodden this path, flown this route, before. We are not alone; we are bound to one another in kinship. There is also freedom from other people, from annoyances, and even from a pandemic.

In essence, it is the most Irish of books – with a strong sense of home but outward looking, with one wing twitching over home soil and another hovering above the Atlantic.
