Footnotes from the Centre for Research Architecture brings together short contributions by students and staff of the MA 2017-18 programme. Published on the occasion of the Centre for Research Architecture s final exhibition at Goldsmiths College, University of London on the 28th September 2018. This publication provides a conceptual framework to compile a series of visual and textual footnotes by each of CRA s students. It enables each student to make visible a crucial fragment of the research process that fits neither within the dissertation s narrative or within the exhibition s format. Placed either at the end of the page, a chapter or a book, footnotes affect the body of a text from without. From the margins, footnotes operate as powerful tools to unwrap and expand a key concept/context, to give space to shadowy information, to expose a methodological approach, to highlight a discovered source, to acknowledge an external contribution, to set the limits of a text, to redirect the reader. By inverting the figure-ground relation, we aim to give space to material that haunts our research projects from the outside. The Centre for Research Architecture (CRA), Goldsmiths, University of London, engages spatial practice in relation to contemporary culture, politics, media, ecology, and justice. It brings variety of cultural and educational backgrounds, and from a diverse range of disciplines to work through questions of this kind. The Centre offers an alternative to traditional architectural education through a unique studio-based environment that investigates the urgent political conditions of our time through a combination of fieldwork, theoretical inquiry, and creative practices. Aquesta publicació proporciona un marc conceptual per recopilar una sèrie de notes a peu de pàgina visuals i textuals per part de cadascun dels estudiants del Centre for Research Architecture (CRA), permetent a l estudiant fer visible un fragment crucial del procés de recerca no inclòs ni en la tesina ni en l exposició. Ubicades al final de la pàgina, d un capítol o d un llibre, les notes a peu de pàgina afecten el cos d un text des dels marges. Aquestes funcionen com poderoses eines per desenvolupar un concepte o un context clau, donar espai a la informació opaca, exposar un enfocament metodològic, ressaltar una font descoberta, reconèixer una contribució externa, establir els límits d un text i/o per redirigir el lector. Invertint la figura-fons, es vol donar un espai material a allò que ronda als projectes de recerca des de l exterior. El CRA incorpora les pràctiques espacials en l estudi de la cultura contemporània, la política, els mitjans de comunicació, l ecologia i la justícia. Reuneix estudiants de diferents antecedents culturals i educatius, i d una àmplia gamma de disciplines. El centre ofereix una alternativa a l educació arquitectònica tradicional a través d un entorn únic d estudis que investiga les condicions polítiques del nostre temps mitjançant una combinació de treball de camp, investigació teòrica i pràctiques creatives.
